Thanks to Apple’s new AirTag, you won’t have to worry about misplacing your possessions anymore. This tiny tracking device can be installed on almost any of your valuables and is synchronized with the Find My app on the iPhone. It has many other uses besides just finding missing stuff. But how does this gadget operate, and is it worth buying?

What is the AirTag?

Apple’s AirTag is a product designed to locate misplaced items such as keys, wallets, and other valuables. The AirTag is shaped like a plastic puck, and its simple design allows you to attach it anywhere you want. This small device is powered by a button cell battery (C2032) and has enough charge to power the Airtag for up to a year.

How does the AirTag work?

By using the “Find me app,” AirTags help people find missing things. Since you are tracking nearby Apple devices rather than the AirTag itself, there must be an Apple device with a Bluetooth connection close by for the tracking to occur. The AirTag broadcasts its location to iCloud when it is within Bluetooth range of the other Apple devices, which it must be in order for this to happen. This method uses minimal electricity and is completely anonymous.

Why should you buy it?

To locate your belongings

The AirTag’s primary function is to locate lost items, so getting this tracker may be a good idea if you frequently lose track of your possessions or want to make sure that you don’t lose them. With an IP67 rating, the Airtag can be submerged for 30 minutes at a maximum depth of 1 meter.

Tracking pets, bicycles, or even your own car

Other than just looking for lost keys, the AirTag has many other applications. For example, you can use it as a tracking device to fasten it to the collar of your pet turtle or dog to prevent them from escaping.

The AirTag can also be attached to your bike or car for another helpful feature that enables you to track down your possession if it is stolen. Thanks to its elegant and adaptable design, the Airtag will work flawlessly and look good wherever you place or attach it.

Built-in Speaker

The AirTag also comes with a built-in speaker that you can use to play sounds to locate your items at close range. Ask Siri to find your AirTag or use the Find Me app to make your AirTag produce a sound when you misplace your keys. You can also use the “Notify when left behind” function to receive a notification whenever you forget your AirTag or move away from it.

Lost mode

You can even add your personal information to the AirTag, such as your name or phone number. Someone who finds your AirTag and scans it with their phone using NFC will see your information.

It’s important to note that other people are only able to scan your lost Airtag if you have enabled Lost mode. When someone with an Apple device comes near your AirTag with Lost mode enabled, you will be notified

The AirTag can be customized

Keyring attachment

You can also choose from various unique keychain attachments to give your basic Airtag a fresh look. The keychain accessories range in price from cheap plastic to expensive Hermes leather that costs 350 USD.

Custom engravings

AirTags are only available in one color and size, but they can be customized to match your style. Apple lets you engrave a word or an emoji of your choice on the back of the AirTag for free.

How to set up the AirTag

Setting up your AirTag is simple and will only take a few minutes. Complete the steps below, and you will be ready to protect your stuff.

Step 1:

Make sure you are running iOS/iPadOS 14.5 or later on your iPhone or iPad. Upon removing the AirTag from its package and peeling off its plastic cover, you’ll hear a short beep that indicates the AirTag is turned on.

Step 2.

Check that your iPhone/iPad has Bluetooth enabled. Bring your iPhone or iPad close to the AirTag, which will cause a window to appear at the bottom of your screen, and then follow the setup instructions. Open the Find My app to find your AirTag.

Alternative to the AirTag

Because the AirTag is designed specifically for Apple products, it will only work with iPhones and Apple-made devices. In case the AirTag isn’t for you, or you have an Android phone and would like a similar device, we’ve selected another product that we think you’ll enjoy.

Tile Bluetooth tracker

Tile is a company that has a good selection of Bluetooth trackers to choose from. These trackers have different tracking ranges, styles, and designs that work with both iPhones and Android phones. The sleek style blends very perfectly with your everyday possessions. Compared to Airtag, the Tile trackers are more versatile and compatible with a wider range of smartphones.
