Maximizing CPU Performance: Liquid vs. Air Cooling: Which Is Better?

A computer’s core is its processor, which is responsible for processing information and is one of its most demanding components. As electricity flows through the processor, heat is generated. Even though the processors get hot, we must ensure they don’t overheat, resulting in a drop in performance. This is why we have a cooling system that dissipates heat and keeps the processor cool.

Currently, there are two ways to cool CPUs. The first involves blowing cool air using a fan, whereas the second involves the absorption of heat using a liquid. Both methods have their own pros and cons, installation methods, and performance characteristics. Whether you are planning on buying or building a PC, we have written about both of these methods to help you make the right choice.


How does an air cooling system work?

The simplest and most basic method of cooling a processor is to attach a fan to the top and blow air over it. This approach is employed in various devices because of its efficiency, simplicity, and low cost. The circulating fan is usually connected to a heatsink, which aids in the dissipation of heat from the CPU. Thermal paste is put to the top of the processor to allow the CPU fan to appropriately cool it, and the entire setup is powered by plugging it into the motherboard.

Fan

The CPU fan sits right on top of the CPU to dissipate heat. CPU fans come in various sizes, colors, and forms, the most common size is 120mm or 140mm. CPU fans have various RPMs (rotations per minute), indicating the maximum fan speed.

Thermal paste

Thermal paste sits between the cooler and the top of the CPU and is there to ensure that there aren’t any air gaps between the plates which will improve heat dissipation. Heatsink

A heatsink is also mounted to the CPU cooler, which aids in heat dissipation away from the CPU. A heatsink is made up of thermal conducting fins that serve to dissipate heat by causing it to travel up the conducting fins, where it can then be pushed away from the CPU by the air. Most CPU fans include heatsinks, and the larger the heatsink, the more heat is removed.

The pros of air cooling

Cheap

Because fan-based CPU coolers are less technical, they are typically less expensive than liquid coolers. When you purchase a Ryzen CPU, you may even receive a CPU cooler in the box. Selecting an air cooling system is a terrific way to save money and is a better option if you do not intend to use powerful software or games.

Simple and easy to install

CPU fans are easy to install and won’t take long to complete. Thermal paste should be added if there is none. The CPU fan should be screwed on top of the CPU, and the CPU cooler should be connected to the motherboard, which is all that needs to be done.

Alternatively, you can cool your PC using a liquid cooling system that circulates cooling liquid through fans and tubes to dissipate heat from your processor. The use of this method is a more advanced and efficient method of cooling your CPU.

Radiator

Radiators can be found in a variety of cooling devices, including air conditioners, car cooling systems, and within a computer to cool down the components. A radiator cools the liquid inside the tubes by passing it through small fins and exposing it to air. The cooled liquid is then transferred to the CPU through a pump, where it cools the processor. The radiator should be directed away from the computer, while the fan should be pointing inward.

Tubes

Tubes are used for transferring cooling liquid from the CPU to the pump and finally to the radiator, where it is cooled. The entire system is normally made up of two tubes, one of which provides cold liquid from the radiator and the other which takes hot liquid from the CPU to the radiator. These tubes can also be made of clear plastic, which looks great because it allows you to watch the liquid flow through the system.

Coolant

The liquid inside the tubes, which is responsible for carrying heat away from the CPU, is distilled water or any other coolant produced specifically for cooling the Computer, and it is non-conductive. Some CPU coolers come pre-filled with coolant, saving you the hassle of adding your own, however, some liquid coolers are sealed and cannot be loaded with additional coolant.


The pros of liquid cooling

Liquid cooling looks better visually

These days, gaming PCs aren’t just square boxes where you can play Fortnite, but pieces of artwork that can be customized with RGB lighting, different hardware components, and more. Having fans running will make your PC look beautiful, but having tubes of liquid and a cooling system will make it even more beautiful.

Liquid cooling is more efficient

If you intend to play high-power demanding games or use any powerful software, it is recommended that you purchase a good quality cooler, ideally a water cooling system. One thing to keep in mind is that liquid cooling will cost slightly more than a regular cooling fan. Because liquid distributes heat more effectively than air, liquid cooling will keep your PC cooler than air cooling.

Makes less sound

Liquid coolers rely less on fans blowing on the CPU to chill it and more on the cooling liquid dissipating heat from the CPU, resulting in less noise. This means that liquid coolers are ideal if you want your PC to operate quietly, as cooling fans produce more noise when your CPU becomes overheated.


Installation

Before installing fans or a liquid cooling system, you need to think about a few factors when building your PC. Because there are so many different components and guides available online today, building your own PC has become much easier. Both cooling solutions will require the application of thermal paste to the contact surface between the CPU and the cooler in order to improve heat transfer.

A liquid cooling system will require extra time and effort to install the tubes, radiator, pump, and fan. Also, you must verify that everything is securely fastened to prevent liquid leaks. Installing a fan cooler, on the other hand, is easier because the fan simply needs to be attached to the CPU.
