Keyboards are one of the most important accessories in our digital lives, acting as our major communication, work, and entertainment tools. While most of us are aware of the typical “regular” keyboard available on laptops and desktop computers, there is another typing contender: the mechanical keyboard. Although these two keyboard layouts appear to be similar at first look, they provide various experiences and features that cater to different preferences and demands.

In this comparison, we will look at the fundamental differences between mechanical and normal keyboards, including their construction, typing mechanisms, feel, performance, and adaptability for specific jobs.

The difference between both keyboards

Regular keyboard (membrane keyboard)

Typically, keyboards are made with a simple circuit board and design that is easy and inexpensive to make. When you push a button down, you make contact with the circuit underneath, which sends a signal to the computer. The keys have a plastic layer underneath, which softens the impact and pushes them back up.

Mechanical keyboard

Mechanical keyboards are constructed differently and function differently than standard keyboards. Gamers commonly use these keyboards because they provide superior performance and feel to a standard keyboard, which is vital for an immersive experience. There are three varieties of mechanical keyboards, each with its own distinct set of functionality and feel.

Why a mechanical keyboard is better

Mechanical keyboards have a distinct reputation for being superior in the field of keyboards, and there are several strong reasons for this opinion. Here are some of the reasons why mechanical keyboards are preferred over membrane keyboards:

Customizable

The buttons on mechanical keyboards can be detached and replaced with others of different colors, which makes them fun to work with. It is also possible to attach an “O-ring” to the bottom of the keycaps to dampen the sound, reduce travel distance, and soften the impact.

Faster

Mechanical keyboards are popular among gamers since they offer better performance in different games and enhance your tactical skill by offering faster response time on each key input. The keys on a regular keyboard need to be pushed all the way down, but on a mechanical keyboard, the key inputs are registered halfway down, requiring less effort.

Durability

Mechanical keyboards are more expensive than normal keyboards, but they last longer due to their durability. Mechanical keyboards are also easier to maintain than normal keyboards. As a result, cleaning is easier because the keys can be disconnected, and mechanical keyboards have a longer lifespan.

Why a regular keyboard is better

There are several aspects to consider when selecting a keyboard, and a normal keyboard, also known as a membrane keyboard, has its own set of features that make it a better choice for some individuals and scenarios. Here are some reasons why a standard keyboard might be a better choice for you:

It’s cheaper

Regular keyboards are the best option if you want to spend as little money as possible on a keyboard. You won’t pay much for a standard keyboard, and for a fair price, you can even get one that has Bluetooth.

Minimal

Regular keyboards are substantially more portable and have a thinner design than mechanical keyboards. This makes the regular keyboards perfect for your desk or office due to their slim structure, which won’t take up much room and fit on any desk.

Makes less sound

Some people may find mechanical keyboards annoying because they make more noise than regular keyboards. Each key on a standard keyboard is registered by a rubber pad, which makes less noise when it strikes. Regular keyboards are an excellent choice for individuals who prefer peace and quiet while typing on their computers.
